Meet the Team – Pat

Get to know the sound people of Regital. This blog series is about sharing the traits and personalities that make Regital who we are. We’re chatting with members of the team about a whole manner of things. With Pat this included building houses and becoming a dad!

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do?

I’m Pat Barnard, born and bred Mancunian and Account Manager at Regital. Actually I wasn’t born here, but that’s splitting hairs. Apart from a few years in Sheffield at University and 19 months in Paris, I’ve lived in Manchester all my life. I’ve been at Regital for 5 years, first in the planning team and then I moved into Account Management looking after advertiser direct and agency clients.

How did you get started in digital marketing?

After University I went travelling with my wife (then girlfriend) and when I came back I needed to start my career. I’d covered some bits of marketing as part of my degree (BA International Business Studies with French) but not very extensively. I guess (looking back) the younger me wanted to work in a young dynamic industry rather than doing something more mundane. I was offered a choice of digital roles in the firm I joined, and I chose to specialise in display, mainly because it seemed more interesting than working in PPC for example.

What are good skills for your role?

Being open and honest are the most underrated skills in our industry. You need to be able to build relationships fast, and the quickest way to do that is being trusted by clients. Expertise (which is also needed) comes with experience and is built over time, but being a nice person and being honest with clients is something that everyone can do from day one. I’ve always tried to do the right thing by clients, and I think they appreciate that.

Agility is also key to the role. It’s a fast paced environment and the sector is constantly evolving so you need to be willing to learn and react quickly as and when things need to be resolved in an instant.

Describe yourself in three words

Resilient. Optimistic. Honest.

It helps that the work we do is really enjoyable, but the team is what sets the company apart. Working with good people, doing amazing work, makes your life much more fulfilled. It really would be hard to see myself working anywhere else.

What are you into - tell us some of your interests?

I find it difficult to sit still and do nothing. That was especially true before I became a parent. I got into DIY and became quite the extreme amateur at this (as anyone at Regital would testify to). As a result I’ve renovated a couple of houses – the one we live in along with another I did as a lockdown project. I did pretty much all the work myself, from laying the foundations, reroofing, wiring and everything else in between (obviously with some expert supervision or help as needed). To some people that might sound like hard work but I absolutely love it. If I do little or nothing on a weekend I feel like it’s a wasted opportunity. With houses and DIY there’s always something that crops up that you can keep yourself busy with. It was a saviour for me, especially during lockdown.

What’s your proudest moment?

Getting married and becoming a dad. Nothing can compare to that (even the houses).

What’s the best thing about working here?

The people. 100%. Great brains and great people. It helps that the work we do is really enjoyable, but the team is what sets the company apart. Working with good people, doing amazing work, makes your life much more fulfilled. It really would be hard to see myself working anywhere else.

What’s your desert island disc?

Eye of the Tiger by Survivor

What’s the strangest food you’ve eaten?

Shark. Not fin I hasten to add

Tell us something that would surprise people about you?

I speak fluent French.

If YOU could change one thing about the world, it would be...?

World peace with no wars. Steps are being taken to combat other things like climate change, but if we all got along we’d get a lot more done quicker and on a bigger scale.
